Thousands braved the weather and didn't allow it to dampen
their enthusiasm for the two day air show and fun weekend on the Thanet
coast. |

On Sunday
afternoon
the Red Arrows, Battle of Britain flight and supporting aircraft
performed for the watching crowds.
I went
along to specifically see how the event was supported in its new
location adjacent to the main town beach to see if Folkestone could
benefit from a similar event.
The whole Marine Parade was given over to pedestrians and concession
stalls, with the main town benefiting from the tens of thousands
watching a full program of events including a large white knuckle ride fun
fair.
No doubt the new Turner gallery also increased its visitor numbers, with
the Red Arrows painting their own images in the sky above it with their
red, white and blue smoke trails.
In comparison to Eastbourne this was not the largest air show by any means, but
it still managed to combine the essential elements of fun and
excitement plus chips with everything.
You will never take the character of Margate away from its roots simply
by building a trendy gallery.
I was left in no doubt as to the main areas of interest, with the
kiddies corner beach entertainment literally in full swing plus hair
raising rides throwing people in all directions at high speed.
Folkestone used to be a fun place but has forgotten everything it knew
to attract visitors in their thousands.
Margate is no less deprived than Folkestone but is trying very hard to
recover with support and sponsorship from local business and the Council.
Big
lessons can be learnt from Margate's success.
