The
church committee has commissioned a project to install solar
photovoltaic (PV) panels at the 13th century building.
Electricity generated will be used in the church as well as being fed
into the National Grid.
It is estimated that the revenue from the electricity over a year could
be £1,200 meaning the initial outlay would be recouped in 10 to 12 years.
The Church of England is keen to promote green energy and cutting
the use of fossil fuels.
Project leader, Geoff Gaskill is applying for a number of grants and the
committee has submitted a planning application for the panels to be
installed on the flat roof next to the path by the side of the church.
The panels will be hidden by the parapet.
Around 41 tonnes of carbon dioxide is expected to be saved over the
panel's 25 year lifespan.
Although solar PV is not new for churches, if permission is granted,
this would be a first for a church in Kent.
It is also hoped to involve Capel school and the wider community in this
project.
