Local residents living near to the Foord Road Viaduct in Folkestone were shocked when three orange suited men were spotted abseiling from the historic structure yesterday (29 May).

But the 127-year-old landmark, which carries the railway mainline between Folkestone and Dover, was merely undergoing an inspection by engineers.

The 19 arch Foord viaduct, designed by Sir William Cubitt, was completed in 1844 and the construction of the railway was able to continue on its planned route.

As the line made its way to Dover, Folkestone Junction station was opened and the construction of the line through the cliffs from Folkestone to Dover commenced. Further stations were opened at Folkestone West, originally named Shorncliffe Camp in 1863, and Folkestone Central in 1884.
