Witnesses have reported an explosion on Folkestone beach today (22 April)

Following the discovery of a possible explosive device, it is understood from reports that police and coastguards sealed off an area east of Copt Point, Folkestone, near to a camping and caravanning site while the area was made safe. The area is popular with fossil collectors.

Military personnel reportedly carried out a controlled explosion on the device, thought to be a mortar, at around 4.15pm

It is believed that the munitions may have been dug up by someone who went to enjoy the day at the beach.

The controlled explosion dramatically captured by photographer, Max Hess
