I have to say that Folkestone is extremely lucky to have the Creative
Quarter and the University Centre, as this is fast becoming the breeding
ground for tomorrow's highly talented people. |

The University Centre held a Variety Night in the Quarterhouse on
Tuesday, and 15 excellent acts kept the audience entertained and amused
for two hours. The show was hosted by Jack Blundell and Ben Steele, who
played off each other with the quick fire comic timing and chemistry
frequently displayed by Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.
Both lads also did a solo stand-up routine, and it was Ben's quick fire
impressions that earned him the only standing ovation of the night - one
that was richly deserved, as he had the audience in fits of laughter as
he read out a self-penned poem in a variety of voices ranging from
Stewie Griffin to Andy Parsons. He ended his routine with a song,
proving this young lad is a multi-talented individual who no doubt has a
long and successful career ahead of him.
The five brave and brawny lads who dressed as the Spice Girls were an
excellent laugh as they enthusiastically danced and mimed to the girl
band's greatest hits. Michael Clay's breakdancing routine was tight and
executed with flair and confidence and was a delight to watch

Mike Clark was another brave performer - this bearded youngster, dressed
as Monty Python Pepperpot lady, delivered a monologue from Steven
Berkoff's play East which ends with the shocking revelation that a
woman's dalliance with a young man in a darkened cinema is her son.
Another highly gifted individual with a unique comic flair, tempered
with a huge dramatic talent.
The female soloists, Izzy, Jodie, Gemma, Mel, Josie and Harriet all
delivered their songs in surprisingly rich and powerful voices, and were
a delight to listening to - a wonderful contrast to the comedy routines
and sketches delivered by the lads. Jack's stand-up observational comedy
had us all laughing and nodding in agreement as he delivered his pithy
observations on growing up.
All in all, a very enjoyable night and I am looking forward to popping
along to their next show on 7 December.
