Local authority [1]: Folkestone, Hythe and New Romney parking referendum called for December [2]

News [3]

Folkestone Labour Party has called for referendums to be held across Shepway on December 8th 2011 in response to Shepway District Council’s proposed changes to parking prices,

The Party says that around 80,000 people will be given the opportunity to vote on whether to support or oppose the Council’s new parking strategy.

The public will be asked the following two questions:

“Do you support Shepway District Council’s parking proposals to introduce parking charges for Folkestone and the rest of Shepway?”

And;

“Do you agree that if the proposed Shepway District Council parking strategy is imposed on the residents of Folkestone that as a minimum Shepway District Council make available one free parking permit per residence and the first hour of a motorist’s parking session at any on street pay and display space is free?”

The Labour Party called for referenda to be held after polling over 1,500 residents across Shepway, with results showing 97% of participants are opposed to any new parking charges.

Peter Wallace, Secretary of Folkestone Labour Party and a resident of Sandgate said: “We’ve had queues of people signing our petition and the public’s reaction has been overwhelming. The people who belong here, and live and work in Shepway, will not let the Council turn Folkestone into a ‘ghost town’. The Council’s decision to spend £900,000 on parking meters is the worst mistake they could ever make.”

The Labour Party has joined with residents and businesses across Shepway to oppose the scheme, believing it will damage local businesses and deter people from visiting Folkestone, Hythe and New Romney.

The Council’s proposal to install parking meters and privatise parking attendants is viewed by many as part of a worrying national trend to raise revenue from parking.

The referenda are due to take place on December 8th, from 4-9pm, at local polling stations across Shepway.

Absolute majorities are bad for democracy.

I welcome the call for a referendum on parking, if it is the only way to oppose this ludicrous idea. But it is ironic coming from a party who itself had an absolute majority in parliament, to vote in its own half baked schemes which eventually bankrupted the country.

So now we have another absolute majority, with its own half baked schemes doing the same for Shepway. They never learn, until its too late.

Unfortunately, the majority of Shepway voters will now absolutely pay for their continued indifference to local politics, every time they try to park.

Shepway parking proposals are a scandal

This is absolute scandal! The council has already spent far too much of our money on this crack-pot scheme which is nothing less than another attempt to tax the already hard-pressed motorist.

It appears to me that the people who thought the scheme up are behaving like medieval barons intent on riding roughshod over the expressed wishes of the serfs.

In fact, they seem to be suffering from historic dyslexia and should be reminded that this is the 21 century, not the 12th!

We obviously need another Peasants' Revolt in Kent!

Why is the Referendum for 8th December being kept so quiet

Why is this Referendum, to be held on 8th December, 2011, not being advertised more?

Are Shepway Council hoping that no one will know where or when to go and vote?
