I have to admit that following my pessimistic optimism over the new Shepway waste collection
program, it does appear to be working. |

Albeit I now spend an inordinate amount of time rinsing and sorting my
waste between five bins, but my land fill waste has now been reduced to
minimal amounts which could almost be collected monthly.
However, there are two bins which need resizing and some rethinking.
The food bin quickly becomes full at the end of just one week and I do
take steps to avoid wasting food. Goodness knows how a large family
copes.
The most obvious problem is the waste paper bin.
With daily, weekly and free newspapers, cardboard, magazines, catalogues
and wrappers, the old black box quickly becomes full at the end of just
one week. That means I have to store excess paper in… plastic bags!
This is a nonsense when there are five bins to use.
Can Shepway District Council please tell me why I can’t put our paper
in the oversized half full purple bin and get rid of the black box, or
is it because they prefer me to do all the sorting on their behalf?
Let's have a rethink please.

Paper and cardboard which are collected with glass cannot be used to produce new paper, due to contamination of the pulp with broken glass.
That said, some councils do collect paper and glass together. In that case, the paper is turned into insulation. It depends upon local demand and the type of recycling facilities available in the area.
Ok.. I did appreciate the possibility of contamination.
So the answer is .. collect paper weekly.
Simple.
