It's now six months since the Hawkinge allotment site opened and it is difficult to imagine today what the intrepid gardeners took over in April.

From a ploughed field to neat rows of beans, potatoes, greens, carrots and runs for poultry, the allotment holders have worked their socks off to transform the land.

Plots are packed with produce

Local councillor David Godfrey, who cultivates a plot on the Stombers Lane site said: "It has been a successful season considering the late start.

"I was glad of the help from my three of grandchildren, Emily, 10, Sasha 7, and William 5 who helped with the harvest."
