Smuggling [1]: Customs Officers in Dover seize cigarettes worth £¾million [2]

Customs Officers have seized more than four million counterfeit cigarettes which were found hidden in a lorry arriving at Dover on Tuesday (26 January).


The cigarettes were found by UK Border Agency officers who searched the vehicle which had arrived from France.

The duty on the cigarettes was worth £723,000, HM Revenue and Customs said.

The 45-year-old lorry driver, was arrested and then freed on bail pending further inquiries.

Dear Ed,

I thought the import of counterfeit cigarettes would have assisted with improving the health of the nation by saving millions of people from the effect of nicotine poisoning.
