The ailing economy is failing to dent traffic using the Port of
Dover, with cruise business booming according to results released
in the port’s annual report.

There were a record 144 cruise ships which generating £4.9million income
and overall revenue was up 5.3 per cent to £60.8 million.
With long-term predictions for a growth in traffic, the Port is already
seeing new freight and passenger capacity with the
launch of LD Lines’ services between Dover-Dieppe and Dover-Boulogne.
Further growth is coming to the port with P&O Ferries’ announcement of a
£282million investment in two of the largest ferries ever to be
constructed for the Dover-Calais route. Due to enter service in 2010,
they will more than double the freight carrying capacity of the ships
they are replacing.
Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive, said: “No doubt the turbulent economy is
having its impact on the port, but the impact is by no means negative.
"Rising fuel costs hit airline charges even harder, which in turn drives
tourist traffic on to ferries; tighter budgets mean that hauliers seek
more cost-efficient routes to market; and a strong euro attracts
visitors in to the UK.”. |
