A
lorry driver who attempted to smuggle almost six million cigarettes into the UK through the Port of Dover has
been jailed for two-and-a-half years. |
Ronan Hughes, (30) of
Clongowan, Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh,
admitted evading £927,271 in excise
duty.
Maidstone Crown Court heard Hughes was stopped
when he arrived in Dover on August 27
last year.
He told customs officers he had taken a
load to France and then picked up a
consignment of fruit.
But when the pallets were searched,
1,180 boxes of cigarettes were found.
