Tit Bits - A solution to the Dungeness Nuclear debate is just 60 miles away

Posted by editor on Nov 26, 2010 - 12:01 PM

There appears to be considerable support from local people for a new nuclear power station at Dungeness although the Government seems far from convinced of the arguments put forward.

Joss fulfils her promise

A pat on the back for Dover chanteuse Joss Stone, who, despite her fame and fortune, remembered her promise to return to Dover to play a gig in the town where she spent her childhood.

Not only was Dover treated to her songs in more intimate surroundings than Ms Stone is used to, but also Deal, where she played to fans in the hall of the Castle Community College.

Community Centre - I don't believe it!

The Hawkinge Community Centre has come a long way in a very short time since the new board took over last year.

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't been sitting in the audience with other members at the AGM, but there was spontaneous applause for the new board's work and effort which they are putting in to make the centre a venue for the whole village, young and old alike.

Shame there aren't any zig zags

I was interested to read that school kids will be showing 'red cards' to lazy parkers who break the law by leaving their vehicles on the yellow zig zag lines outside Kent schools. The card will be waved and roadside banners are proclaiming that drivers must 'keep the zig zags clear' or face up to a £70 fine.

Kent County Council's school travel plan team and Kent Police are launching this clampdown in Gravesham and Dartford because many schools in the area have highlighted that they have problems with illegal parking. If the initial three-week pilot is successful, it will be offered to other schools across Kent.

It's just a shame that there is only a zig zag line outside the Hawkinge Primary school. No doubt a line will eventually be painted outside the Churchill School.

Let us all hope it won't be an accident which prompts KCC to get out the yellow paint.

Just £700 to go

Our good friend Robert Mouland together with the Folkestone Leas Step Lift Carriage Appeal committee are now just £700 shy of the £25,000 target to save the historic carriage.

Well done!

Youngsters seen inside Hawkinge Community Centre

Young people have apparently been spotted inside the Community centre.... and according to reports there is a pool table and a computer game machine being installed soon.

What a difference a few months under new management makes. Well done to Tony Hutt and his team.

Villagers complaining about parking on footpaths

Community Warden, Tanya Clark is urging people living in the village to show a bit of consideration when it comes to parking their cars.

Villagers have been complaining about cars blocking driveways and parking too close to junctions, making it difficult to see if the road is clear when trying to cross.

Many are fed up with the number of blocked footpaths, especially those pushing prams or in wheelchairs, who have to use the road because cars, often belonging to residents are parked on the pavement.

It is not just inconvenient but could also be extremely dangerous.

Had to shout here! here!

Thanks to 'Dourman' for the posting on the GO Forum under Snow causes schools to shut. How many of you agree I wonder?

Our esteemed poster writes: "Two inches - sorry 5 centimetres of snow and the schools close.

"Not in my day, even a hefty foot (30 centimetres) would merely have the caretaker spreading more rock salt around. Are we wimps or are we just being taught to be wimps?"

(Read it here http://seknews.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=31.0)

What sort of example are schools setting our youngsters? Where is the gumption which I and no doubt other people of my age were told was so important?

Initiative appears now to have sadly been replaced by rules and regulations.

Power cuts in dim village

Voltage fluctuations and power cuts in the village remind me of the so called 'winter of discontent', except we did at least know when the power was going off in those days - but I still managed to get stuck on the 24th floor of my office block more times than I want to admit.

One thing we didn't have to worry about were microwave cookers, which when running on reduced voltage, as we have been recently, don't cook as quickly and possibly not as safely as they should. I have even been told of people buying new ones because they thought their perfectly serviceable microwave was not cooking properly. I wonder if they could claim against the energy company.

Movement on the employment land

Do my eyes deceive me or is there really some work starting on the employment land next to Lidl's?

I watch with interest.

Whatever next?

There's a Pool Table in the foyer at the Community Centre as well as football in the sports hall!

Have the new trustees, or are they directors, gone mad?

Toucan crossings on Spitfire Way

I must admit to not knowing what a Toucan Crossing was before they were installed on Spitfire Way.

It is described as the Toucan (two can cross) crossing and is designed to be a shared crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The point is that they show a red light to stop motorists so that walkers and cyclists can cross in safety.

Unfortunately I have been told of cases where motorists are failing to stop, making them possibly more dangerous than not having one at all.

Farewell to the Hawkinge Partnership

Its not down to the credit crunch but I hear the Hawkinge Partnership will soon be departing from the cabin next to Tesco.

I understand they will be concentrating there efforts in the Folkestone East area.
