Digital photography booming at camera club

Posted by editor on Oct 04, 2008 - 05:00 AM

FOLKESTONE CAMERA CLUB MEETING - 29th September 2008

Report by Jenny Barraclough

Our new season has begun with a vengeance, with many new members joining us, in fact our membership has now reached nearly 100.

We have so far had several interesting evenings including audio visuals  and a digital tutorial.

Sometimes one particular evening may not suit a new member as we, naturally have to cater for all aspects of photography, so we do encourage any potential new members to come along for several weeks before deciding whether to join us or not, they will then see the variety of interesting evenings we have to offer.

So if you have come along to one evening and found it not to your interest, do please come again and maybe next time it will be more interesting for you.

Our first digital image competition of the season was judged by Mrs Bea Auger DPAGB. Bea is a new judge to our club but is a very experienced photographer and she gave us some constructive comments on our entries, and her results were as follows (points out of 20) :-

CREATIVE:-

(14 entries)  A MOMENT OF INDECISION  by   Alice Gosling 20

LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY  by   Eve Wilson  20

RED CURTAIN  by   Paul Gavin LRPS   19

DREAMING  <WBR>by   Bob Brisley LRPS   19

OPEN GROUP 1:-

(17 entries)  RUSTING AWAY  by   John Mitchell   20

BACK STREET CAMBRIDGE  by   Arthur Bailey 20

                  SHIRES  by   Bett Boreham    19

PORTRAIT GROUP 1

(11 Entries)  LEE  by   Fay Meek     20

DICKENSIAN CHARACTER  by   Bob Brisley LRPS DPAGB  20

CHALK FACES  by   Sue Cowell    19

OPEN GROUP 2:-

(24 Entries_  SNOW BUNTING  by   Graham Snowdon  20

                  SWALLOWTAIL  by   Monica Stringer   20

THROUGH THE LIGHT  by   Louise Rogers  20

CHILDREN AT PLAY  by   Mike Connell  19

PORTRAIT GROUP 2:-

(9 Entries_  CHARLIE CHAPLIN  by   Carole Harvey  20

THE BANDSMAN  by   Jenny Barraclough  19

As the numbers of entries above show, the digital age is well and truly upon us now, We now only have one entry per member per group, as it was becoming a mammoth task for the judge with two entries per member, as it is. 75 images to comment on in one evening is rather a lot for the judge.  Due to this we have transferred the monochrome section to the Print Competition night!

In addition to our Monday meetings we have a monthly Audio Visual Group Practical Evening where members can come and learn more about making Audio Visuals using Pictures to Exe,  and a monthly Practical evening, where members come along and are given the opportunity to practice with our studio lighting and enjoy a more informal evening of photography.

The 6th October ROBERT CANIS ARPS will be presenting “THE FIELD TECHNIQUES OF NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY”
A nature photographer of high regard. Followed by our First Print Competiton of the season on the 13th October.

Visit our web site at www.folkestonecameraclub.co.uk where you can see all the above winners photographs and more information about our club.

Our meetings are held at the St. Georges Church, Audley Road,, Folkestone (opposite West Station) on Mondays at 7.45pm.  New members are always welcome, if interested please phone Mrs Jenny Barraclough (Press Officer) 01303 245399 or  e mail:  jenny-bar@dsl.pipex.com

Learning how to improve your digital images

Posted by editor on Sep 24, 2008 - 09:00 AM

FOLKESTONE CAMERA CLUB MEETING - 23rd September 2008

Report by Jenny Barraclough

The 2008/2009 season has started very well, with interesting evenings along with several new members joining us.

The fourth meeting of our new season, has followed on in good form with an informative Digital Tutorial. This was presented by Gavin Hoey. an expert on Photoshop, who writes articles and CD software for Digital Photo Magazine each month.

This was Gavin’s 3rd visit to our club and we are still learning from his tips and techniques on how to improve our digital images by manipulation and enhancements on the computer. We had a very full hall with both old and new members enjoying his wit and guidance through some aspects of Photoshop. We certainly hope he will come again. It was a great evening where we all went home maybe a little bewildered but ready to give it a try.

Our first projected image competition of the season will be held next week (29th) and on 6th October ROBERT CANIS ARPS will be presenting “THE FIELD TECHNIQUES OF NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY” A nature photographer of high regard returns to inspire us. This will be followed by the first Print Competition of the season on the 13th October.

If you are interested in Photography in any form, why not come along and join us. We have a varied programme over the season, which can be viewed on our website www.folkestonecameraclub.co.uk. Along with much more information about our club.

Meetings are held at St. Georges Church, Audley Road, Folkestone, (opposite West Station in Shorncliffe Road) every Monday commencing at 7.45 pm New members are always welcome and anyone interested in joining, please, ring Jenny Barraclough (Press Officer) 01303 245399 or e mail: jenny-bar@dsl.pipex.com for further information.
