Liberty bodices, harvest bloomers and suspenders and gaiters

Hawkinge Acrise & Paddlesworth WI meeting August 2007

We were delighted to welcome our West Kent link WI to the August meeting. The ladies of Shoreham WI arrived at about 12.30pm and were invited to have lunch with some twenty of our ladies. It was a thoroughly enjoyable meal and started our afternoon off very nicely indeed. Lots of chat and laughter filled the hall.

We were also pleased to be joined by a member’s grand-daughter and her friend, both fourteen years old. They had helped with the setting up of the hall and certainly deserved their lunch.

Once we had eaten and 2pm approached more ladies came for the meeting proper and it was a full house for the rest of the afternoon.

Our President then opened the meeting with the singing of Jerusalem, a wonderful rendition with so many voices filling the air. It was her pleasure to congratulate two of our members who have recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversaries; Joy & Ernie Bruce and Daphne & Roy Sayer, giving each a beautiful arrangement of golden flowers. Birthday greetings were accorded to Mesdames Vine, Whitehouse and Wilson.

The speaker for the afternoon was Lee Ault who took many down memory lane and entertained other younger ladies with her treasure trove of rationed fashion – 1939 to 1945. It was quite wonderful to hear “oh yes I remember those” ringing round the hall but what the two fourteen year olds made of “liberty bodices” “harvest bloomers” and “suspenders and gaiters” I can’t imagine. What a world away from 2007 where we have fashion for all and at very inexpensive prices, certainly not having to try and buy a piece of parachute silk to make our undies!

When Mrs Ault had finished her talk the ladies from Shoreham were taken to St Martin’s at Acrise to see the Flower Festival – the icing on the cake for them I think. What a wonderful afternoon of companionship and new friendships.

We really are a very friendly WI and should you wish to join us you would be made most welcome. We celebrate the formation of our WI at the next meeting on Tuesday 4th September with a Birthday Tea, starting at 2pm in the Village Hall.

Huge vote of thanks to Hawkinge Cubs

Posted by editor on Jun 30, 2007 - 10:21 AM

The 3rd Hawkinge Cubs joined forces with Shepway District Council to tackle litter along the beach in Folkestone. There were about twenty children aged between eight and 12.

“They all did a fantastic job,” said Alison Wood, Environmental Education Officer of Shepway District Council. “They worked really hard for a good hour and they were so enthusiastic. The results were impressive and the beach looked spic and span. On behalf of the council I want to give them a huge vote of thanks.

“But of course it is shame that it had to be done, and if people did not drop litter in the first place we would not have the problem. Our Environmental Community team can enforce on the spot, fixed penalty fines of £80 for anyone who drops litter or cigarette butts and that is something we are enforcing.”

Hawkinge footpaths need you!

Posted by SteveWalker on Jun 22, 2007 - 12:05 AM

We are asking people who enjoy the countryside to come along and lend a hand to help improve the footpaths around Hawkinge. There is growing demand for access to the countryside from the many new residents in the area eager to explore the local countryside.

One by one we are improving our Hawkinge footpaths and we rely on volunteers to help maintain them. It is great fun and there is a good feeling of having achieved something worthwhile for the local community. In our tea and coffee breaks, we find out about the fantastic local landscape, history and wildlife.

We need volunteers of all ages to help improve our local footpaths and on each action day there are a range of different activities to be done such as clearing vegetation, restoring way-markers and installing new easy-to-use kissing gates.

The locations are all over the parish and surrounding areas. One day we could be putting up display panels in ancient woodland, the next we could be working in a medieval drove lane with stunning views across the valleys.

Volunteering is a great way to enjoy your local countryside throughout the year. You will meet other like-minded local members in our group and have a great time doing something worthwhile.

Do come along, you can choose to come as often or as little as you want to. We meet at 10.15am outside the Village Hall, Canterbury Road, Hawkinge (TR 215 399). Telephone for other pick up points.

The next few dates are: Sunday 1st July, Tuesday 31st July, Thursday 9th August, and Thursday 6th September. We will pleased to see you.

IIf you would like find out more you can contact me, Steve Walker Project Officer for Hawkinge at the White Cliffs Countryside Project. at Cherry Garden Upper Works, Castle Hill, Folkestone, CT19 4AJ. Telephone 01303 274806 or Email: swalker@whitecliffscountryside.org.uk

World traveller late for local speaking engagement

Hawkinge Acrise and Paddlesworth WI meeting June 2007

An extremely pleasant afternoon was begun by the President conveying birthday greetings to Mesdames Moore and Wethered. June Moore was especially pleased that another June birthday was being celebrated as she had been the lone guest at the birthday table for many years.

Not too much business to get through but as luck would have it the speaker had not arrived by the start of the meeting and as 2.30pm approached the president was casting nervous glances towards the front door. At last Mrs Ward burst into the hall with rather loud and not very complimentary comments about the M20 and lack of movement on it. Unfortunately she also suspected that her exhaust had blown as it had started making rather strange noises whilst she was sitting in the traffic jam!

However, she was a consummate professional and did not let this rather bad start to her afternoon affect the brilliant delivery of her talk. A first class raconteur who delighted us with tales of her travels around the world – (could you manage a three day round trip just to see the Taj Mahal?!) - alas some were rather overshadowed by disaster which did make us glad we were not accompanying her on those trips.

During social time the ladies were encouraged to try a new competition about “The Queen” – I thought the questions almost impossible to answer but several did and there was a tie for the winner between Gillian Philcox and the speaker Yvonne Ward; another quick fire question and Gillian won outright.

The monthly competition for two fruit scones was also won by Gillian (certainly her afternoon!) – it was gratifying to see so many entries this month – well done ladies. There was time during the afternoon to book for the outings planned this year; in July a trip on the Paddle Steamer Kingswear Bay and in October a visit to Westminster Abbey. The East Kent Federation is also putting on a “Federation Day” in Dover Town Hall in September and several of us hope to attend. Of course this venue is very tight on visitor numbers and we hope we will not be disappointed in our bid for tickets.

So, apart from the monthly meetings there is a monthly craft club and a monthly walking group and lots, lots more to enjoy – why not come along and see if you would like to join us. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd July when we have the yearly Garden Party. If you are interested in coming along to that please contact Carole Seabrook our President on 891420 and she will make the necessary arrangements for you.

HAWKINGE AND DISTRICT GARDENERS' SOCIETY

The members of the Hawkinge and District Gardeners' Society recently enjoyed their annual garden visit.

This year approximately 30 members visited Flint Cottage in Bishopsbourne where they were treated to a meander around the garden belonging to Mr & Mrs P J Sinnock. The garden is part of the national garden scheme raising money for charity.

A pleasant evening was spent wandering around the small garden: the entrance to the garden having large Scots pine under planted with trees and shrubs and wildlife pond. In the main garden there were 3 ponds and 2 water features; bog areas; mixed borders; alpines in sink gardens; herb garden; vegetables in raised beds. Members also received tasty refreshments served by Mr and Mrs Sinnock.

Next month the speaker’s for the evening (Wednesday 4th July) will be Mr and Mrs Ian Stone with a talk entitled ‘On top of the world – Nepal and Tibet’

Recently our 5th Print competition of the season was held and judged by Dr Peter Lewis LRPS, a very experienced photographer with excellent tips on how we can improve our photography.

Peter is a member of St. Mary’s Bay Camera Club and a very competent judge, who had a very tiring evening judging 50 prints in all. There will be no meeting the following Monday due to the Bank Holiday, then on the 14th May our final Print Competition along with the St. Aubyn Cup Competition which is for Landscape Prints only, will be held,

These meetings and results will then lead to our Annual Dinner and Awards Night in May. Our A.G.M. will be held in July.

We are certainly doing well – within the club we now have, among our members, A.R.P.S., L.R.P.S., C.P.A.G.B., and D.P.A.G.B. award and competition winners of acceptances and prizes, we are without a doubt among the top clubs in Kent now, not only for our members personal achievements but also as a club.
