Cruise on a paddle steamer

Posted by editor on Feb 13, 2007 - 09:06 PM

Our second meeting of the year was held on the 6th of February. Jerusalem was sung and birthday greetings were given to Mesdames Allard, Leonard , Allen, Hughes and Gent. I then had the pleasure of introducing our Guest Speaker, Mr Roger Rawlings who had come to talk to us on the Coastwatch Scheme.

This is of course an important task in our area as the nearby Strait of Dover are one of the busiest shipping lanes of the world. The Coastwatchers are all volunteers, male and female, and perform an invaluable job in all sorts of situations. Safeguarding everything from tankers to inflatables and even hangliders! Our thanks to Mr Rawlings for a very enjoyable and informative talk.

The business of the day was mainly to discuss events and excursions we have now planned for the rest of the year.

In March the Annual Council Meeting is at Ramsgate where the Guest Speaker will be Clarissa Dickson –Wright. In May there will be the Top Team Quiz and a trip to Canterbury for an educational tour of St Augustines Church and other places of interest, this of course includes lunch in one of the many very pleasant hostelries in the town.

We are going to Westminster Abbey in October. We hope to arrange a River Medway cruise on a paddle steamer in July which should be great fun. Family and friends are able to join us on some of the outings, so do come along ladies and see what a friendly bunch we are.

Our next meeting is on the 6th of March at 2 pm in the Village Hall when our next speaker is Imogen Corrigan on the subject ‘Seeing is Believing’

For further details please contact our secretary Christine Allard on 863146 or myself on 891420.

Visit our website www.folkestonecameraclub.co.uk where you can view these winning photographs, plus many more, and where you can also visit links to various photographic related sites and shops.

Due to the increase in membership and digital workers, we have now reduced the number of entries into our monthly competitions to one per member as our evenings were becoming very long and very hard for a judge to comment on fairly. These evenings are still very well supported and we gain very interesting comments to improve our photography.

The following week we had a slide exhibition from Clay Cross Photographic Society, which is a collection of slides from all over the country. We saw some superb shots of wildlife, landscapes, portraits and many other subjects, which enthralled us all.

On 5th February we will be having an Audio Visual evening where members will be showing their work and competing for the Nigel Winter Trophy.

The 12th February will be our 4th Print competition of the season and the following week 19th February KERRY DUNLOP will be showing "MOTOR SPORTS AGAIN" After last years exciting presentation Kerry gives us more amazing shots.

A date for your diary, we will be holding a Wine & Wisdom Quiz Evening on 2nd April at Capel-le-Ferne Village Hall - watch this space for further information.

Our meetings are held at the St. Georges Church, Audley Road, (on the corner of Shorncliffe Road, opposite West Station), Folkestone on Mondays at 7.45pm. New members are always welcome, if interested please phone Mrs Jenny Barraclough (Press Officer) 01303 245399, or e mail jenny-bar@btconnect.com
