They don't give a hoot for local views

THEY DON'T GIVE A HOOT FOR LOCAL VIEWS

From Telegraph article: Christopher Booker's Notebook

The announcement last week by Malcom Wicks, the energy minister, that a giant wind farm on Romney Marsh in Kent could go ahead, has sent shock waves across the land. The 26 2.5-megawatt turbines proposed by the German-owned nPower for one of the most romantic and unspoiled landscapes in southern England were opposed by every elected authority in the area, including two county councils, two district councils and 12 parish councils; not to mention English Nature, the RSPB and a host of environmentalists.

The 370ft turbines, visible from 20 miles, will cover 1,000 acres of marshland, next to a famous bird reserve, requiring concrete foundations sunk 110 feet into the earth and six and a half miles of new roads, using 50,000 tons of roadstone. But so determined is Malcom Wicks's Department for Trade and Industry to meet its EU target of 10 per cent of energy from "renewable" sources by 2010 that the DTI used an obscure provision of the 1989 Electricity Act to call in the Romney Marsh scheme for decision by a DTI inspector.

The inspector was apparently not troubled by charges that the developers had made wildly misleading claims for their project (both the leader of East Sussex county council and Richard Hartley QC called these "lies").

More significantly, however, he made no attempt to address the argument that the 26 turbines will achieve no net savings in carbon dioxide emissions (because conventional power stations will have to be kept running to cover the three-quarters of the time when the turbines, through inappropriate wind speeds, are not generating); and that they are only viable because their operators will receive £9 million a year in hidden subsidies, paid through inflated electricity bills, on top of the £5 million they will get from selling the electricity itself.

The significance of the Romney Marsh decision (announced by Mr Wicks at a meeting of the British Wind Energy Association, the chief lobbyists for the "Great Wind Scam") is that it flags up the Government's determination to force through thousands more turbines - regardless of planning rules or the wishes of local communities - even though they serve no useful purpose, cost us all a fortune and represent one of the most shameless confidence tricks of our time.

Please make sure that your elderly and vulnerable neighbours have one of these notices. If you are in an area where there is either a Warden or PCSO they also have these.

You can also print a copy of the Hawkinge Gazette 'No trick or treat' poster from the 'Free downloads ' section on this site or click the link http://www.localrags.co.uk/tricktreat.htm

Help us to grow

HELP US TO GROW

Dear Ed

The Hawkinge Football Club is growing and to help us continue to provide soccer for the villagers, we are urgently looking for more helpers.

The Club was formed in 2002 and is Affiliated to the Kent Football Association.

We coach all age groups both boys and girls, most training takes place on Saturday morning

We raise money by collecting subs, donations and sponsorship, and after paying Pitch fees to the Parish Council along with paying the Ref we are always struggling to buy balls etc.

Our home matches are played on the Parish Council pitches with other Clubs such as Folkestone Invicta youth teams.

Along with other football clubs, local schools and Shepway Council we are supporting the Parish Council bid to the Football Association for funding for a Pavilion, and if successful this will become another facility for the village.

At the moment we have a small group giving up their time to give the young a sport they all enjoy, so if you can spare a couple of hours just get in touch either

Phone 01303 893499 or email soccer@hawkingefc.co.uk

Thank you

Confusion over dates for Health Centre plans

Posted by Stuart on Oct 21, 2005 - 11:12 PM

CONFUSION OVER DATES FOR HEALTH CENTRE PLANS

Dear Ed

You may recall an earlier article, where I announced that the plans for the Health Centre would go before the Development Control Committee at Shepway District Council on the 8 November.

Today, whilst passing the site of the proposal, I noticed that another public planning notice had been posted to a telegraph pole. (One had been posted a few weeks prior, only to be removed by persons unknown).

The new notice says that objections will be heard until 10 November, two days after the proposed Committee meeting.

This will be the fourth date that has been given as a deadline for objections. Two sets of letters were sent to residents, one letter said the 7 October and another said the 14 October.

Two different public notices have been posted. The first said the 10 October was the last date for objections, and now it is the 10 November.

The case officer has been contacted this afternoon and she still insists that the date for the Committee hearing is the 8 November, but objections will be noted until 10 November.

Am I to assume that those who make representation on the 9 or 10 November will not get a voice? Or am I to assume that the Development Control Committee will not reach a decision on 8 November?

900 jobs to go at Eurotunnel

Posted by editor on Oct 21, 2005 - 04:16 AM

900 JOBS TO GO AT EUROTUNNEL

Eurotunnel has announced 900 job cuts as it fought competition from low-cost airlines and ferries.

The Channel Tunnel operator said the cuts would come through voluntary redundancies in the UK and France.

Eurotunnel chairman and chief executive Jacques Gounon said: "We need a company that is more flexible, more reactive to our markets, and more in tune to the needs of our clients."

The job cuts - around 450 jobs in the UK and 450 in France - will be completed by June next year leaving Eurotunnel with 2,300 staff.

In a statement, the company said: "These are exclusively voluntary redundancies. Eurotunnel had committed not to make any compulsory redundancies."

Eurotunnel said it was "an important reduction in staffing" which would strengthen the financial position of the company.

Mr Gounon said: "It is thanks to this effort that we will be able to maintain and strengthen our position as cross-Channel market leader.

"The remaining employees whose commitment, motivation and sense of professionalism I salute, are committed to work together to reach these objectives and by so doing will ensure the long term success of this great company."
