Kent Police has issued a warning following the discovery of the theft of copper earthing wire from the outside wall of a house in Elvington, near Dover.

The theft was discovered only after the domestic fuse box blew and the power to the house failed on Sunday (25 April.)

PC Richard Callaghan, neighbourhood officer for Aylsham and Elvington said; 'This is potentially a very dangerous situation and could have resulted in injury to the occupants of the house.'

'I am very concerned about this latest trend in metal thefts and I have received at least three other reports from residential properties in the area. The copper earthing wire is only about 4 foot in length, but it demonstrates that an opportunist thief takes advantage of every chance they get. I urge residents to regularly check that their earths are in place, and if they are missing or have been tampered with to contact their power supplier and Kent police.'

If you have any information that may help officers with this incident please call 01622 690690. Alternatively you can call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
