London Transport Depot Open Day in Acton (Photos)

Out & About

By Dana Wiffen

Having visited the LT-Museum in Covent Garden during half term in February I decided that because I was disappointed by the complete lack of rolling/running stock that I would visit the LT depot in Acton on Saturday (12 March) where most of their remaining stock is kept.

What a surprise there was here. Wall to wall stock from old LT tube trains to vintage LT buses and all the other items from old kiosks, station signs, bus stops, maps and support vehicles with the addition of running bus services from the depot around the town and back which included a pristine looking RM1.

They also had a small tram running on overhead power around part of the inside of the depot and also outside as well as a couple of miniature trains which kept the children happy. The semi-chaotic layout added to the interest, and the work of “the friends of” was evident throughout this huge area.

There were of course numerous stalls selling models of buses and trains in the various gauges some running train sets and trams sets (I had never seen these before) and stalls selling books, photos, tickets, postcards, and maps etc…..

The open day attracted all sorts from the avid collectors, families with granddad included for a reminisce from his days on the buses and tubes then there was the anorak whom knew every detail of every bus and train and of course the regular enthusiast like myself.

It was a great day out, I am sure that even though I went around a few times I missed something, I would definitely go again superb.
