Three people have been arrested in connection with metal theft offences in the last two days as Kent Police continue to put pressure on metal thieves.

Two men were arrested in Wye on Thursday morning 24 November, after reports of suspicious activity at Wye College.

The men, both from Folkestone, were arrested on suspicion of burglary other than a dwelling and criminal damage.

They have been bailed until 5 December while enquiries continue.

In a separate incident a 21-year-old woman was arrested at an address in the Wingham area in the early hours of Friday morning (25 November), in connection with the theft of metal.

Inspector Angie Hobbs said: “Metal theft is a growing problem nationally because of the current high commodity prices.

“However we take the theft of metal very seriously and will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.”

She urged people to stay vigilant: “Metal thieves are not choosy about what they steal and target anything from the lead flashings on roofs to electricity cables and even copper piping from gas meters,” she said.

“They are often at work during the day so the public can play a vital role in helping us catch them by reporting suspicious activity straight away.

“At first glance metal thieves could give the impression of being legitimate workmen, but if something looks in the slightest bit suspicious it probably is. We are asking people to go with their gut instinct and report it,” she added.

Police have issued the following advice:

· Avoid leaving tools or equipment around your home or business that could either be stolen itself or used to climb onto your roof to steal flashing or piping.

· Keep patio furniture secure.

· Security marking metal items with a forensic solution is also worthwhile as it can help identify your property if it is stolen.

· Call police immediately if you see suspicious activity. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
