Kent’s winter service fleet is now on standby to begin salting if icy conditions threaten the county’s roads.

A fleet of more than 60 salting lorries will roll into action when temperatures plummet to keep key parts of our road network open.

Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Waste, Bryan Sweetland, said: “We know from recent experience that severe winter weather can strike early and we are well-prepared for this.

“We have worked closely with our colleagues in Kent’s districts over the summer to tailor specific plans for each area that will see Kent County Council provide salt and districts providing workers to treat specific locations, such as town centres, doctors’ surgeries and other vital areas.

“The past two years have seen some of the harshest winter weather for three decades and we are well-prepared for similar weather this year.”

Head of Highway Operations for Kent County Council, Spencer Palmer, said: “In addition to Kent’s fleet of salting lorries, an army of 180 farmers is on standby to clear dedicated routes when cold weather sets-in. They have all been provided with snowploughs by Kent County Council to keep key rural roads open.”
