Fears that tsunami protection proposals could block access to top Kent fishing beach

An important fishing beach at Dungeness could be cut off  if plans before Kent County Council are approved.

The Environment Agency and EDF Energy want to move shingle from the beach to protect the nuclear power station, and Camber from erosion and tsunami.

Anglers are worried that the movement of thousands of tons of shingle will mean no access to one of the most important cod fishing spots in Britain.

But the agency have said it would only fence off a small area while work was under way.

Dungeness nuclear power station was built in the 1960s and shingle has been used to protect the plant, but since 2007 it had been brought in from elsewhere.

The defences would also protect the village of Camber in East Sussex.

Now a planning application is being considered by Kent County Council to use the cheaper option of taking material from an area east of Dungeness Point.

EDF and the Environment Agency each want to take up to 30,000 cubic metres every year until 2023 to protect Dungeness nuclear power station and nearby Camber from erosion and tsunami.
