Dungeness purple heron chicks fly the nest

News

A pair of purple heron chicks, which it's believed are the first to be bred in the UK, have flown the nest.

A 24 hour protection scheme was set up at the end of April after first signs that the herons were nesting at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds(RSPB) site at Dungeness.

Thousands of visitors have flocked to the location to catch a glimpse of the two birds during the summer.

The chicks, hatched in July, were recently seen successfully feeding alone, catching numerous small fish.

Fledglings often migrate away from their nesting location when fully independent.

The purple heron is closely related to the larger and widespread grey heron and can reach 35in (90cm) in height with a wingspan of up to 60in (150cm).
