Shame about the Herald's non-reporting of Leas Lift 125th Anniversary

Have your say!

Dear Editor,
Re: 25,000th passenger carried during 125th Leas Lift celebrations
Yes, well done to Eamonn and the team for a very great effort since July 31st re-opening and the 125th anniversary weekend just gone.

However, the reporting of the facility and events by the local Folkestone Herald has been frankly appalling.

Just last weekend they sent a reporter/photographer who took several pictures, including the visit by MP Damian Collins on the Saturday to officiate at the 125th event.

Yet it's not in this weeks (Thurs) paper!

This follows several attempts to get things reported there but to little avail - even the record of the 15,000 visitors was delayed and not highlighted in that paper.

Yet their rivals the KM are very willing to report these events regularly and did so this week.

What is wrong at the Herald? I and I'm aware many others are saying this.

Yours

Ray Duff

Herald's reporting needs attention

The Herald have been quick to point out others mistakes, especially the railway companies over the past few weeks, but if I am not mistaken the Herald published a photograph on the front page of their paper regarding the state of Folkestone West Station, when in fact the photograph they published was of Folkestone Central Station

Wider picture

I buy both the Herald and Express (I'm retired and have to fill my days with something!) and I actually believe the reverse to be true.

My wife and I often read stories in the Herald that are either not in the Express at all or are in the Express a week later (SDC car parking charges, the dead Folkestone whale, shops that are opening/closing, etc). And I get irritated every week when I see David Plumstead moaning about something in the Express

But I think we need to be fair. Each paper can't be expected to get everything every week. We should not be so negative and should support our local media!

The Herald was right - you are incorrect

I'm afraid M L Scott is incorrect. The picture on the front page was West. You can tell because Central has two sets of island platforms whereas West has tracks between just two platforms, on each side of the rails.

What is the reason why?

The Herald's seeming reluctance to report the Leas Lift and recent events is, according to many I have spoken to, related to the fact that it was not handed to another local business person who wanted to run it. If that's so, then shame on them, If not, then why the apparent reluctance?

The fact is though that this should not stop the Herald from reporting events such as the 125th anniversary the week after.

Why send a photographer, who took several pics etc, if there's little chance of story being run ?

Virtually everyone i've spoken to since the Lift re-opened are very well satisfied that Eamonn and the team are running it and want them to continue permanantly.

ps: The railway stations have deteriorated ever since rail privatisation in my view but that's another matter

Interest

"According to many I have spoken to" - so this is based on gossip and tittle tattle then.

I think the fact that a photographer was sent shows the Herald does have interest in it

PS. RDG is correct, the picture is of Folkestone West

Does it ?

It might be 'gossip' regarding the Herald's seeming non-reporting which is why I said IF.

However, it still leaves the question as to why they did not print, at the very least, one of the photos of the 125th anniversary- incl of MP Damian Collins visit to mark it- as it was a major local event? The KM came later but still managed a pic in printed version. (Nothing in this Thurs' Herald (30/9) either as a delayed pic.) Don't suppose we'll ever know why....
