Young swimmer smashes Alison's British women’s English Channel record

News

A 26-year-old  woman has smashed the Women's English Channel swimming record and was just one minute shy of the British men's record.

Rebecca Lewis, from Cumbria knocked 13 minutes off the record in yesterday's swim (31 August).

Setting off from Dover at 3.30am, she arrived in France 8 hours and 35 minutes later.

The physiotherapist, who was raising money for Cancer Research, said she had a feeling that she was on-course for a good time, but it really hit home when the support boat launched the dinghy, signalling they were close to French shores.

The old record, set 20 years ago by ‘Queen of the Channel’ Alison Streeter MBE, stood at eight hours and 48 minutes.

Now she has broken the record she insists she’ll be back to break the men’s record next year.
