Lord Radnor announces name of new Folkestone's Leas Lift operator

History

Lord Radnor has announced that a new company has been formed to run the Leas Lift once the building works are completed.

The Folkestone Leas Lift Community Interest Company has been formed by local historian, Eamonn Rooney, who worked on the lift for over twelve years, Pamela Hogg and Terry Begent, who are all actively engaged in other local community projects to regenerate Folkestone.

Any profits from the operation of the lift will be reinvested to preserve the iconic landmark.

It is expected to back in business on Monday 19 July 2010

As well as being an essential transport link between the town centre and the seafront, it will be operated as a 'living museum' of Victorian engineering, offering educational opportunities and guided tours for schools and community groups.

Qualified drivers supported by a team of volunteers will run the lift.

Eamonn Rooney said: "The lift is an important part of Folkestone's heritage. It has been sorely missed since its closure last year and we were delighted when restoration was commenced in April.

"Once the work is completed there will be an opening ceremony to re-launch the service.

"We are grateful to the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust and Cllr Roland Tolputt for their support in establishing the Folkestone Leas Lift CIC.".

Yay Go Go Eamonn !!

As someone who helped the campaign to get it back running (including setting upthe first petition to the Council) I say...

Yay Go Go Eamonn Rooney.

Best news for the town in months !!

(Bags I go on the first cab up or down...)

ps: I strongly suggest any Tory SDC Councillors do NOT turn up for the re-openning . They won't be welcome in my view- and I suspect everyone elses...

Brilliant news about the new Lift operation.

Well done Eamonn and all for getting the Lift back into full operation in time for this summer.

Let's hope residents support this piece of Folkestone's heritage as well as visitors to the Town.

Perhaps Her Majesty will grace the re-opening of the Leas Lift, carrying her "knighting sword" in her famous handbag, to honour Eamon for services to Folkestone's heritage. All in a day's work!
