Following the successful educational trip to Romney Marsh in January, partners in the Transmanche Green Network programme have this week returned from a productive familiarisation visit to France.

Partners from Shepway District Council, Discover Folkestone, Hythe & Romney Marsh, Kent Wildlife Trust, Canterbury City Council were hosted by their French counterparts for a packed educational programme covering: their approach to green tourism in country parks and trails in the CAB region.

There were also presentations from French partners describing their roles in protecting the environment of natural coastline and countryside features in and around the Boulogne area.

The final day was set aside for devising an educational programme to be offered to English school children who visit the Arena Centre on the Ecault Dunes near Boulogne.

Six organisations - three in Kent, one in France, with the Boulogne Shepway/Canterbury Co-operation Organisation as co-ordinator - representing local authorities, tourism, environmental and educational interests are behind the scheme which aims to increase the prosperity of the Romney Marsh and areas around Reculver, near Herne Bay, and the Arena natural environment education centre, near Boulogne, by encouraging sustainable tourism and conservation activities.

The programme includes familiarisation visits and workshops for tourism and education staff, eco-fairs in Folkestone, Herne Bay and Boulogne, trans-border media promotion and printed information.
