Controversial Hawkinge supermarket plans withdrawn

News

It has been announced today (19 March) that a controversial planning application for a supermarket at the rear of the Hawkinge Community Centre has been withdrawn.

A spokesman for Shepway District Council has confirmed that the application was removed pending further discussions between the applicant and Hawkinge Community Centre over the use of shared parking areas.

A number of villagers were unhappy with the plans and at February's meeting of the Parish Council, there was universal condemnation of the proposals and Parish Councillors voted unanimously to 'strongly object' to the application for the supermarket.

However, the withdrawal of the plans still leaves a question mark over the future use of the land which is currently used as a car park for the Community Centre.
