Contractors working on a Shepway beach, popular with holidaymakers unearthed five unexploded World War II shells.

Police were called  to Dymchurch beach on Wednesday (10 March) and cordoned off the area close to Hythe Road while bomb disposal officers conducted a controlled explosion to successfully blow up the Bofors anti-aircraft shells .

Police said the shells were believed to have been buried on the beach and were very rusty.
