Pubs, clubs and off-licences in Shepway are being warned of the consequences of selling alcohol to people aged under 18.

A shop owner in Folkestone was fined £80 on Wednesday (17 February) after they sold alcohol to two young people aged 14 and 15 who were taking part in a joint operation with Kent Trading Standards.

Kent Trading Standards are now considering whether to take the shop to a Licence Review.

Police are concerned that with spring just around the corner, with warmer weather and lighter evenings, more young people will attempt to buy alcohol.

Strict new conditions that come into force later this year will require people to show identification with a hologram if they want to purchase alcohol.

People under 18 found attempting to, or buying alcohol, should also be aware that they can face a fine up to £50. It is also an offence to use a fake or borrowed identification and to buy alcohol on behalf of someone underage.

Licensing Enforcement Officer PC Chris Stephens said: "Residents often express concern about young people drinking alcohol, getting drunk and causing anti-social behaviour. Therefore, we continue to take action with our partners to prevent the supply and consumption of alcohol to children and to ensure licensees fulfil their responsibilities. I would also urge parents to help us by making sure their children know both the dangers and consequences of drinking alcohol.".
