Susan's cash injections - making a big difference in Hawkinge

News

Kent County Councillor Susan Carey is making a big difference to Hawkinge by allocating a number of grants from her KCC small capital grant fund to the local community.

Cllr Carey has allocated £4,500 to the purchase of a high quality photocopier for the revitalised Hawkinge Community Centre.

Susan, who is also a Director of the Community Centre said: "The Community Centre offers more to the village than rooms for hire. This photocopier is a new service and complements the computers and broadband access already on offer. I hope both businesses, voluntary organisations and individuals will find it useful."

The Hawkinge Allotment Society has received a £1,500 grant from the same fund which will go towards the cost of a compost toilet,  and Hawkinge Youth Football has had £2,000 awarded to help with the cost of equipping their Sports Pavilion.

Hawkinge Hurricanes Basketball Club have recently been given a grant of £858 for equipment and The Churchill School was allotted £500 to buy a telescope for their astronomy project.

Cllr Carey is acquiring some new kit for the Elham Valley football league which is run by the local Police and Community Wardens. She explained that Hawkinge always fielded a team in this and and there are also teams from Lympne, Elham, Lyminge, Etchinghill and Capel.

Cllr Carey admitted that 2009/10 had been a bit of a bumper year for the village.

" I am able to direct my grants where I think they will be the most use; this last year there was a lot happening in Hawkinge that merited support.

"Looking ahead to 2010/11, I intend to help the cricket team, Hawkinge Colts, as they need a new practice net so I've earmarked £2,000 for them," she said.
