Parish Councillors have voted unanimously to 'strongly object' to the proposals for a supermarket at the rear of the Hawkinge Community Centre.

The plans for the food store were submitted to Shepway District Council at the beginning of February and were discussed at the Parish Council meeting on Wednesday (10 February).

Around twenty five villagers who attended were given the opportunity to have their say during an adjournment to the meeting.

There was universal condemnation of the proposals and many considered the development too big for the site. Others had concerns over the parking which could spill into the surrounding roads when the Community Centre was hosting events. Residents considered Heron Forstal Avenue was not suitable for heavy lorries delivering to the supermarket and they were worried they would be disturbed by night time deliveries.

The question of safety of pedestrians and other road users was commented upon in respect of delivery lorries which would need to enter the public car park and reverse to the unloading bays.

The views raised were echoed by councillors.
