The Army has been called in to help Kent Firefighters clear snow from roads after some of the heaviest snowfall seen in the east of the county this winter.

Communities in East Kent were cut off today (9 January) after fresh snow, which began to fall in the early morning, caused major disruption for motorists, with roads between Dover, Deal and Sandwich being worst affected.

Both the A258 and A256 were blocked by snow, with drifts up to 4 feet high in places, and residents in the Deal and Sandwich area found themselves cut off from the rest of Kent.

The A258 has since reopened as has the A256 but further heavy snowfall is forecast for tonight.
