The body of a microlight pilot was recovered off the French coast near Boulogne just a day after the man set off on a flight to Australia to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.

Martin Bromage, 49, from Cheltenham took off Monday morning but contact with him was lost over the English Channel.

A spokesman for Dover Coastguard confirmed Bromage’s body was found by a small French patrol boat yesterday, near Boulogne.

Bad weather conditions had prevented the sending of a helicopter, the Coastguard added.

The father-of-two set off from Gloucestershire Airport on his solo flight to Sydney on Monday morning (10 January).
