The New Year has kicked off with some good news for supporters of the 1890 Leas Lift carriage restoration project.
 

Work dismantling the historic carriage has at last begun and the restoration work should soon follow.

However, Treasurer of the restoration group, Robert Mouland remains cautious and said: "The 1890 carriage has now been dismantled. Very good news for Folkestone's heritage. What a wonderful way to bring in the New Year with such an eagerly awaited development, even though I still remain very cautious.

"After 120 years of salty sea air, it's a wonder it is still intact, however in the Empire days they were built to last.

Hard working fundraiser Robert continued: "Regrettably, we still need to raise funds for the stepped concrete plinth, on which the restored carriage will stand, hopefully being situated within the Folkestone Lower Coastal Park, as the Leas Lift lease has now expired and is not being renewed by Shepway District Council."
