The Capel Battery which includes a look-out post, is a 13.5 acre site on the top of 350 foot cliffs at Capel le Ferne, between Folkestone and Dover, and has views over the English Channel to France.

The battery was built in 1941 and although most of the above ground buildings have gone, the look-out post used to search for enemy ships and planes and a labyrinth of tunnels below ground remain.

Kevin Gilbert, of Clive Emson Auctioneers, said the passages may even allow access to the sea. "This is an absolutely fascinating site. The more you delve into it, the more history you find.

"In the tunnels there was a dressing hospital and the idea was that injured troops would be brought in at sea level and taken up through the labyrinth of tunnels to the hospital to have their wounds dressed. They would then be taken up to the clifftop to go on to other hospitals for recuperation."

It is currently owned by a family who bought it from the Ministry of Defence in the 1980s.

The former battery and tunnels will be auctioned at the Ramada Hotel in Maidstone on 21 September with a guide price of £90,000 to £100,000
