It will be an early start for Council representatives when they board the inaugural departure of the High Speed Train (HS1) next week.

Dover District Council representatives will travel on its first preview service from Dover Priory to London St Pancras on Monday, 7 September at 6.42am.

The full service is not scheduled to begin until 13 December.

Cabinet Member Cllr Nigel Collor and Head of Regeneration Tim Ingleton, who have played leading roles on behalf of the Council, will board the train and travel to St Pancras with representatives of Southeastern and other guests.

Cllr Collor, Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management said: “Seeing HS1 in service at Dover Priory is like a dream come true, and the fact that we can travel to London in just over an hour, and be back in Dover for a meeting at 10am, shows the potential of high speed rail travel.

"We look forward to Dover realising the benefits that are already being experienced elsewhere, and will follow as a result of us being connected to the high speed service. This great news comes as we continue to work with partners on a range of pivotal regeneration projects that continue to gain momentum for an exciting future.”

Progress indeed! Does anyone else remember that in the 1950's service from Folkestone to London took about 90 minutes by steam train? Fifty years on we've cut the time by one third. And this is progress? Add about thirty minutes to look for a parking space, and the net gain is nil.
