More than a hundred villagers turned out on Sunday lunchtime (27 September) to gather on the mound, off Haven Drive, and watch a display by a wartime Spitfire aircraft.

The restored fighter aircraft with the distinctive sound of its Merlin engine flew out of Hawkinge during the Second World War.

Named the ‘Spirit of Kent’, the Spitfire gave an eight minute display to commemorate the Battle of Britain giving spectators a thrilling and nostalgic display as it soared above the Kent Battle of Britain Museum and over the new homes built on the former WW2 airfield in Hawkinge.

Young and old alike watched in silence as the unmistakable sound of the Spitfire was heard again in the skies over Hawkinge.

The sight of the hundred or so who gathered on the mound was as someone remarked: "Like a scene from the feature film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
