Officials say a fire broke out at a nuclear power plant around 50 miles from Dungeness on the Channel coast last week.

The fire occurred on Tuesday (8 September) at the Penly Nuclear plant in northwest France soon after a fire drill but was quickly put out according to reports from the AP news agency.

No personnel had to be evacuated from the site

The regional fire fighting agency said its crews and other emergency teams quickly extinguished the blaze in one of the buildings at the Penly power plant near Dieppe.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

No other details have been released.
