Paul O'Grady offers to buy Lydd School sheep

Comedian Paul O'Grady has stepped in to try and save the Lydd Primary School sheep which is due to be killed on Monday.

Mr O'Grady, who lives in Aldington near Ashford said on BBC Radio Kent: "I heard this mother's plea and I thought this is wrong. I'm all for teaching children animal husbandry but what happens is that on a farm it's different. The sheep that go to slaughter are not made pets of.

"But a lamb that you hand-rear, that you personalise, that you give it a name and then announce that is going off to the abattoir is wrong. You can't do that."

He added: "I've got 11 sheep of my own that have all-been hand-reared. I will pay the school for him and I'll bring him over here and he can go in with my sheep and have a ball.

"And I'll keep the kids updated. I'll let them know on the show how he's doing and I'll send photos."

The school said the animal had been taken into hiding for "safe-keeping".

An absolute disgrace,Marcus should be saved. The headteacher should be sacked and should consider if she is really suited to the care of children.

Marcus - I hope the head loses her job over this

I couldn't agree more with P Evans Marcus was not a farm animal roaming in fields, he was a pet kept in a pen. The head teacher and her representatives, including children who wanted him slaughtered should have watched the sordid process, perhaps only then they would have a conscience.Out of a school of 250 , 14 representatives seems low, were they carefully chosen?

I hope the head loses her job over this and they are never allowed to keep animals again. She is certainly not suited to influence children only thugs.

Well done to Jo for blowing the whistle

Well done to Jo for blowing the whistle on this.

Children have a natural compassion which is knocked out of them by these events.

The school should not be allowed to do this with pigs now. The children can now learn how and why people feel compassion and kindness for animals. They can learn about meat production in many other ways. I am sure they were unaware of the process of the slaughterhouse and think of it like Shaun the Sheep in Wallace & Grommit.

I would support any action taken in protest against the head teacher. I hope Paul O'Grady will lend his support to stop this happening with piglets.

"The sheep will be cut in half and and they will eat it."

I disagree because my younger siblings go to Lydd school and have been told "the sheep will be cut in half and and they will eat it. "This is WRONG because they should have to be told this at such a young age.

Why should they keep it as a pet and then have it slaughtered... this is what I am wondering !
