Shortly before 3.00pm yesterday (22 August) Dover Coastguard received 999 calls that a woman was drowning in the sea and Folkestone Coastguard Rescue Team, Kent Ambulance service and a Rescue Helicopter rushed to the scene.

The woman was pulled out of the water by two members of the public and paramedics and doctors from the emergency services attempted to resuscitate the casualty who was then airlifted to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford in a critical condition.

It is reported that the woman was swimming in the sea when she got into difficulties.

Watch Manager Trevor Dowle at Dover Coastguard said: "Unfortunately some members of the public were hampering a safe landing site for the rescue helicopter by refusing the Coastguard Rescue Teams requests to move to a safe distance."
