Keeping Hythe firmly on the map

Shop locally and give visitors a friendly welcome. That's the message from Hythe Chamber of Commerce & Tourism (HCCT) as it steps up its 2009 campaign to boost business for the town.

Earlier this year the chamber launched a new-style map-guide and a dedicated website, both aiming to raise awareness of Hythe as a short break holiday and leisure destination.

Now it has added a business directory section to the online facility, providing shops and other enterprises with a 24/7 opportunity to promote their products and services.

Says chairman Kevin Howell: "Our website - www.hytheguide.co.uk  - is undoubtedly helping to spread the message that Hythe is an unusually attractive place to visit. Hits are being recorded not only from across Kent but also from farther afield, including the Continent.

The new business directory, already being used by retailers and providers of professional services as well as places to visit, stay, eat and drink, is one of several additions to the contents which we are considering.

Mr Howell said that alongside its promotion activities the chamber is engaged in a drive to recruit members from a wider range of businesses - now mainly High Street-located - than at present belong to the organisation. To develop its work, it was important to bring in people with different commercial experiences. A stronger membership meant that HCCT could be even more effective in representing and promoting local interests.

"Although the recession is making life difficult for many traders, Hythe has a great product to sell. HCCT is leading the way in making its attractive and distinctive features more widely known not only by using every possible opportunity to attract stay-over and day visitors and make them feel welcome and want to return but also by encouraging residents to shop and to do business locally."

Mr Howell said that the revamped visitor map-guide had proved very successful. Twenty-five thousand copies had been distributed, mainly in areas outside Kent. It was planned to publish an updated edition early next year.
