Demand for more land to be made available for allotments

Demand for allotments is growing so fast that waiting lists mean people may wait decades for one to become available.

Kent Green Party is calling upon all councils in the county to ensure more land is allocated for allotments.

Chair of the Kent Green Party Dr Hazel Dawe said: “When people are responding to the recession by trying to grow more of their own food, we need local councils to step in and increase the amount of land available for allotments.

"Kent Green Party wants all the local councils in Kent to allocate more land under their Local Development Frameworks to allotments. A typical allotment in the UK attracts 30 applicants and will save a user about £950 a year on food.

“There is ample evidence of demand for allotments all over Kent. Also, under the Smallholdings and Allotments Act 1908, Councils actually have a duty to provide allotments where there is demand for them in their area.”
