Residents are being advised by Kent Police to keep their belongings safe this summer, as temperatures soar.

The force is reminding people to maintain home and car security in the hot weather.

The increased temperatures have a direct impact on the number of burglaries due to insecurity.

Chief Superintendent Matt Nix, of Kent Police's Partnership and Crime Reduction, said: "It is easy for people to forget or get complacent about their property when they are enjoying the warmer weather.

"Kent Police would like residents to remain security-conscious and would ask them to take some very simple steps to ensure they, and their homes, do not fall victim to burglars. There are very few burglaries in Kent and Medway and we want to ensure that continues to be the case during the hot weather.

"If you are in your back garden, secure windows and doors in other parts of your property. If you leave your house please check that all windows and doors are shut."

Reduce risk of burglary by keeping doors and windows shut if you aren't in the room, thinking about which windows you leave open in hot weather, remembering some burglars can get through small spaces so, if in doubt, shut and lock it, locking garden equipment and ladders away and securing sheds with strong padlocks

Burglars will seize any opportunity to steal and will look for doors and windows left open on hot days.

Motorists are advised to ensure windows and doors are locked, Sat nav suction marks are wiped off windscreen and no items are left on display.
