Just seven months after re-opening, The Marquis at Alkham has been awarded two coveted AA dining rosettes.

Kent’s newest fine dining restaurant, which has five luxury bedrooms, has also scooped a 5-star accommodation rating in the AA’s ‘restaurant with rooms’ category – the highest grading that can be given.

The Marquis’s head chef, Charlie Lakin, and his team were praised for ‘good accuracy of cooking, excellent quality ingredients and a good balance of flavours’. The AA only awards two dining rosettes to the best local restaurants which demonstrate consistently high standards.

Ben Walton, manager of The Marquis, said: “Charlie is very passionate about his cooking and it shows. He uses the finest seasonal and locally sourced ingredients and his imaginative menus reflect the very best in British cooking. He is always developing exciting new dishes packed with robust, fresh flavours and his culinary skills keep bringing guests back time and time again.”

The smart contemporary interior

Hospitality and service at The Marquis were also singled out as ‘clear strengths’, with staff being commended for their attentive, friendly approach and good product knowledge.

“Everyone has worked exceptionally hard to make The Marquis a success and we’re thrilled with the awards,” added Ben. “It’s never easy launching a new business, especially in such a difficult economic climate, so we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved.

Stylish and comfortable luxury bedrooms

“We’re now looking forward to a busy summer. We’ve just opened our new garden terrace and we’re planning lots of events over the next few months, including a Vegetarian Week, wine and beer tasting dinners, a concert, summer party and celebrity cricket match.”

The Marquis offers table d’hote lunch and dinner menus which change regularly, with two courses for £15.50 and £17.95 respectively. There’s also an extensive a la carte selection with two courses for £27.95. The bar is open to non-residents and non-diners and offers everything from coffees to cocktails as well as a wide selection of quality snacks.

Double bedrooms at The Marquis start from £65 per night, or £75 with full English breakfast, based on two people sharing. Guests can also book one of The Marquis’s two cottages from £75 a night. Situated in a converted stable next to the owner’s vineyard, the cottages cater for two or four people and are just a three-minute drive from The Marquis.

The Marquis is in Alkham Valley Road, Alkham, just five minutes from the M20 and 10 minutes from the Channel Tunnel and Dover’s port and cruise terminal. It caters for weddings, meetings and conferences, as well as parties and private dining. Click for more details
