Anger over foodstore plans to take over Community Centre and Village Hall car parks

Plans which have been submitted for a foodstore sited in the existing car park of the Hawkinge Community Centre have angered villagers and a meeting has been hastily arranged by Hawkinge Parish Council for next week.

The application for a 10,000 square foot foodstore with parking for 77 motor vehicles and 20 cycles has been made by Edinburgh Land Estates.

In the plans the parking includes most of the existing Community Centre car park and the Village Hall car parks.

Shepway District Councillor David Godfrey will be fighting the plans, he said that although he was aware talks had been taking place since January, he did not know any details until last Friday (17 July).

Chief Executive of the Hawkinge Community Centre, Colin Tearle said a meeting of the Directors last night (21 July) had "unanimously resolved to oppose the plans."

"The rights of access over the Community Centre land will not be given up," he vowed.

The Parish council has called a special meeting for Thursday (30 July) to discuss the proposed plans. The public are invited and Shepway Planning Officer Ben Geering will be attending.

The meeting is due to be held in the Hawkinge Community Centre from 7.00pm.

The nearby residents will be affected and us further away ones will have all the benefit but without the hassle – assuming it will be beneficial.

It would be nice to see the "car park(s)" look used rather than just be waste ground with a few car spaces on them.

The local specialist shops should also benefit and more competition for Tesco may be a good thing.

Do we actually need another Supermarket, and if we do why put it in the middle of houses next to another established one?

It looks like the village of Hawkinge is turning into a town.
