Councillors were 'over the moon' when they gave their unanimous backing to plans to build a new pavilion costing £¾million at the Hawkinge football ground.

A bulletin from the council said: "The Parish Council is pleased to announce that at its meeting in July the Council resolved to proceed with the building of a football pavilion at its Sports Ground off Transfer Road (known locally as Incinerator Road).

"The proposed scheme was the subject of a full presentation by CTM Architects and was overwhelmingly supported by the Council. The next stage will be to place the formal bids for external funding which will allow the scheme to proceed.

"The Chairman of the Parish Council, David Callahan said that the scheme is high quality, provides an excellent facility and is exceptional value for money. He also thanked the Partners working with the Council to get the scheme to where it is now, these included the Football Foundation, the De Haan Charitable Trust, Shepway District Council, Hawkinge Youth Football Club and other Hawkinge Senior Teams."

Cllr Callahan described it as "a very exciting project" and a happy Cllr Tony Hutt admitted: "We can't get a better deal than this."

Hawkinge Parish Council will be stumping up £197,000, the Football Foundation another £250,000 and the De Haan Charitable Trust £316,000 for the project.

The pavilion will include four changing rooms, a meeting/function room, kitchen and other associated facilities.

It is understood that access to the complex would be from Incinerator Road and not Cricketers Close.
