Passengers on Folkestone's Leas Lift which was scheduled to close yesterday (30 June) had to be rescued after it ground to a halt twenty-feet from the top of the cliff.

Two men from the town were trapped for nearly an hour after problems with a leaking valve meant there was not enough water to pull  the water balance lift carriage to the top station.

The Victorian lift is closing after a dispute between Shepway District Council who subsidised it and the owners the Radnor Estate.
