Fire has ripped through a village hall in Shepway.

Crews were called to the derelict Swingfield Village Hall at around 6.30am this morning (6 June) to find the building off Canterbury Road near Densole alight.

Three fire crews, some using breathing apparatus fought the blaze but had to withdraw from the building as flames engulfed the roof space.

Firefighters were still at the scene damping down at 9.45am.

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.

Chairman of the Charity responsible for the hall, Colin Tearle told the Gazette: "I am shocked and saddened that 60 years of history has been destroyed in as many minutes.

"The building had not been used for over a year but it is still such a sad end for something associated with the community for so many years."
