Blueprints for a giant steel scarecrow 150ft high, dubbed more like Worzel of the South than Angel of the North have been sent to Shepway Council.

The giant sculpture which could be seen from 25 miles away, is the brainchild of artist Terry Anthony.

Although it would be dwarfed by the giant wind turbines recently erected near Brenzett on Romney Marsh, the creation of Dr Syn, from Russell Thorndike’s novels will be visible from Calais.

In the novel Syn was vicar of Dymchurch, but by night he donned his ragged disguise to become the Scarecrow.

The sculpture, which could cost £1million would include a lift to take visitors to a platform perched on the scarecrow’s hat.

Mr Anthony hopes to fund the project with a mixture of public and private cash.
