Compulsory water meters for 11,000 homes in Folkestone

Eleven thousand homes in Folkestone are being fitted with compulsory water meters over the next 18 months.

Half of all homes in the town already have the devices, and work to fit remaining properties with meters started at the beginning of June 2009.

Folkestone and Dover Water said only homes that could not have the devices on technical grounds would be left out.

Compulsory metering was brought in after Area of Water Scarcity Status was given by Defra in 2006.

The company is aiming to complete the metering work by 2012.
